UFC Fight Night Mexico City Results, Royval out works Moreno

The Arena CDMX in Mexico City, Mexico hosts UFC Fight Night. A 13-fight card is highlighted by a pair by of top five ranked rematches.  

Brandon Royval exacted some revenge and may have earned himself another shot at UFC Flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja in the nights main event. Former champion, Brandon Moreno started the fight off strong as his overhand and leg kicks gave him an early lead. The number three ranked Royval battled back with volume boxing combinations, body kicks, & knees to the body. The volume attack from a relentless Royval won the night earning the split decision nod. A year and a half away from the octagon for Brian Ortega and he’s back in the win column. Rodriguez had a huge first round knocking down Oretga with a straight left. “T-City” got the fight to the ground in the second opening Rodriguez with an elbow. Ortega got the fight back to the ground quickly in the round securing an arm-triangle choke finish. Both Royval & Ortega getting a measure of revenge after injuries has cost them in the first meetings.

Daniel Zellhuber managed the distance keeping Franciso Prado on the end of his jab, body kick, and left hook. Zellhuber’s striking battering Prado leaving Prado with major swelling under and outside his right eye.  Unfortunately, at the last minute it was announced that Raul Rosas Jr. withdrew from his bout against Ricky Turcios due to illness. Manuel Torres started the main card off by running his current win streak to six in a row submitting Chris Ducan by rear naked choke for the 7th submission win of his career.

Raoni Barcelos overcame dislocating his shoulder to submit Cristian Quinonez. Both men landed their power hand. Barcelos got the fight down took the back and found a rear naked choke finish.  Jesus Aguilar ran his UFC record to 2 wins and 1 loss out dueling Mateus Mendonca for a split decision win in a fight that had a frantic pace.  The original meeting between Edgar Chairez & Daniel Lacerda was changed from a submission to a no contest due to an early stoppage. Chairez definitively ended the rematch submitting Lacerda by arm-triangle choke for his 7th submission win. Fares Ziam & Claudio Puelles both make in specialists in their respective areas. It was Ziam who proved to be a master of his art knocking down Puelles in the second round and being savvy enough to not only escape danger on the ground but threaten his own submissions to earn the split decision. Ronald Rodriguez made a successful UFC debut collecting the third rear naked choke win of his career forcing submission artist Denys Bondar to tap after a close first round.  Felipe Dos Santos got the better of a split decision against Victor Altamirano. Altamirano scored nine takedowns but the powerful punches and back take in the third round saw enough to get the nod. The opening fight of the card unfortunately ended early. Erick Silva took a miss step while avoiding a Muhammad Naimov spin kick injury his knee without contact.
