Second Title Fight added to Bellator 289
The co-main event of Bellator 289 will see a rematch for Bellator women’s Flyweight title.
Newley crowned champion Liz Carmouche will make her first defense against the women she dethroned Julianna Velasquez.
At Bellator 278 the “Girl-Rilla” captured the championship by fourth round TKO. Carmouche had Velasquez stuck in a crucifix position delivering elbows but many felt the strikes weren’t impactful enough to warrant the stoppage. Velasquez vigorously protested the stoppage as soon as the ref waived off the fight.
Carmouche is a WMMA pioneer who was the first female competitor to step foot inside the octagon. The title victory ran the San Diego fighters Bellator record to a perfect 4-0.
Velasquez scored finishes in three of her first four wins in Bellator. Over the Brazilians next three wins, which all came by decision, she became the number on contender, won the Bellator title, and even made a successful defense over Denise Kielholtz.
Bellator 289 is set for December 9th at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville Connecticut.
