Rumored- Rampage vs. Roy Jones Jr.

The combat sports world is a buzz after word has started two spread that at Bellator 97, it will be announced that former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (32-11 MMA) will face multiple weight class boxing champion Roy Jones Jr. (56-8 Boxing) in a pay per view boxing match.

Jackson, who signed with Bellator MMA as a free agent after fights with the UFC, has not fought since a UFC on Fox 6 unanimous decision loss to Glover Teixeira, which was Jackson’s 3rd consecutive loss. The last time Jackson’s hand was raised in victory was at UFC 130 when he defeated Matt Hamill by unanimous decision. Prior to signing with Bellator, Rampage several times did bring up his eagerness to step into the boxing ring before his combat sports career was over. Most recently Rampage has been scene on the Spike TV show Impact Wrestling as a member of the Main Event Mafia.

As recently as 3 weeks ago Roy Jones Jr. had been rumored to be in talks with the UFC about a possible match-up with Anderson “The Spider” Silva, that was until Chris Weidman’s left hand found Silva’s chin. Jones Jr. has 40 of 56 wins by KO/TKO. Jones Jr. has bounced back from a 3 fight losing streak to have won back to back bout over Max Alexander (UD) and Pawel Glazewski (SP).

Again none of this has been confirmed. It’s also noteworthy that neither Bellator nor Viacom who has partial ownership of the MMA promotion, have ever talked about getting into the boxing side of combat sports. Viacom who also owns Spike TV where Bellator is televised and have recently announced the coming to terms on a broadcasting deal with Glory kickboxing. If this bout dose take place, the talk that it will happen on December 28th, the same night asWeidman vs. Silva II.
