MFC 40: Crowned Kings Features Triple Main Event

It will be title fight night on May 9th, at the Shaw Conference Center in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, as MFC 40: Crowned Kings will have a triple main event with as the Middleweight, Lightweight, and Bantamweight titles on the line.

Only one of the three title bouts has seen both participates named as Tom Gallicchio (18-8) and Kurt Southern (13-5) battle for the second time for the vacant MFC Lightweight title. Gallicchio and Southern has been expected to fight for the vacant strap at MFC 39, until at the weigh-in’s Gallicchio was over by .2 lbs; and in a strange rule was not allowed to re-try. The fight would still happen but with only Southern in victory be able to claim the belt. Gallicchio would defeat Southern via 2nd round rear naked choke, leaving the Lightweight championship still vacant. For Gallicchio the win was his 2nd straight coming off a submission of David Johnson. With the loss Southern saw hiw 2 fight win streak ended.

Both Middleweight Champion Sam Alvey (21-5) and Bantamweight champion Anthony Birchak (11-1) are awaiting opponents to be named.

Alvey is 4-1 in his last 5 fights with the lone loss coming by decision to former MFC Title Holder Elvis Mutapcic. The 4 wins have all come by TKO’s over Daniel Almeida, Lucas Lopes, Jay Silva, and Jason South. Alvey a member of Team Quest has 13 of 15 stoppages by (T)KO.

Birchak is on a 5 fight winning streak that includes MFC wins over Ryan Benoit, in a fight of the year candidate, and submitting Tito Jones to become the inaugural MFC Bantamweight champion. Birchak has 6 of 9 stoppage wins via submission.
