Diamond Boy Shines under the Stars Capturing his first major title

On a typical beautiful Albuquerque summer night Wrecking Crew Promotions “Hecho En Nuevo Mexico” brought the heat.

We kicked off the night with Lorenzo Benavides vs. Gabriel Rodriguez. Benavidez coming forward with the pressure to work his body shots and set up great combinations to the head up top. Rodriguez was trying to navigate the pressure but it was Benavidez that landed the harder and more powerful shot. After four rounds we saw a unanimous decision win for Lorenzo Benavidez.

A short notice bout was next as Maximus Moya took on Andres Rey. Both fighters were undefeated and somebody’s O had to go. A very evenly matched contest. Both fighters had their moments.  Rey’s size advantage translated into a power edge landing the more noticeable punches. The third round was very even as Moya

had some snapping shots, but Rey countered well and have a strong guard. It was not surprising we went to the judges scorecards as close as a fight as it was in the end all three judges saw it in Andres Rey’s favor.(39-37 39-37 40-36 ).

We were privileged to have New Mexico’s boxing champion Brian Mendoza, following an intermission in attendance. He spoke to the audience telling the crowd “he’s ready to defend his title for his hometown”.
The next fight of the night was a quick one as Jose Villapondo faced Quentin Deleon. When the bell sounded it was full series of shots from both fighters Deleon found a quick knockdown. Seconds after the knockdown DeLeon tasted blood and was able to finish off Villapondo with a three peace combination that drew blood from Villapondo’s nose and it was enough for the referee to call an end to the fight. It was a HEATED rivalry between the two and one of the best fights of the night.
A highly anticipated fight was next as Matthew Baca made his return, in front of his hometown fans. He was scheduled to face Ashton Royal fighting out of Texas. Baca scored an early knockdown and was slowly taking over. Baca was very dominant and efficient with strong body shots that set up a devastating right hand and uppercut at the end of the second round to end the fight. Baca dominated and earned a huge TKO win telling the crowd “the champ is back”.

In the main event of the evening in Matthew “Diamond Boy” Griego fought for a title in his Backyard against Merlito Sabello from the Philippines, a very worthy opponent who has high-level experience.  Griego came out relaxed fainting and working his jab. He would throw his right hand successfully the whole fight. Sabillo was on his back foot all night and could not get any offense going. In the second round Griego landed fury of punches with Sabillo cornered forcing the referee to step in calling a stop to the fight. Griego earns another highlight win and and adds a WBA NABA  title to his resume. By Gabe Padilla
