UFC 294 Gets a New Co-Main Event

A recent elbow surgery has lead Paulo Costa to not being medically cleared to compete at UFC 294. 

Khamzat Chimaev will remain on the card taking on former Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in a three round Middleweight affair.

Chimaev is 6-0 during his tenure in the UFC. The fighter nicknamed “Borz” was on the cusp of a Welterweight title shot after a unanimous decision win over Gilbert Burns at UFC 273. On the brink of super stardom Chimaev was set to face Nate Diaz in the main event of 279 until he massively missed weight. The promotion kept Chimaev on the card and he submitted Kevin Holland by D’Arce choke in the first round of a Middleweight bout.

Usman’s reign as UFC Welterweight champion spanned over three years and included five successful defenses. And illustrious reign that’s on him, separate himself from the competition to be recognized as hands-down the second greatest welterweight champion in UFC history. At UFC 278. The crowd was stunned Azmeer minutes away from a successful defense Leon Edwards landed a head kick that changed history as he supplanted Usman as UFC champion. In March Usman was given a rematch that saw a decision again go in Edwards favor. It’s unknown if this trip to the middleweight division is a test run or a permanent move.

UFC 294 takes place on October 21 from the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.
