UFC Austin Results, Tsarukyan punches his way in to Title Contention

The Moody Center in Austin Texas hosted the world famous octagon for UFC Fight Night “Daruish vs. Tsarukyan”. The criticism of Arm Tsarukyan coming in was that he was a decision fighter. It’s easy to say haters will have to find something new after tonight.

Arman Tsarukyan has announced himself as a title contender in the Lightweight division. A measuring first minute saw the pace accelerated as a right hand forced Beneil Daruish head to dip, Tsarukyan grab the head firing off a knee, barley grazing the forehead. A follow up right hand down the pipe knocks Daruish on to his back, ground & pound finishing the job. After the win in Octagon Tsarukyan said “hopefully next fight is for title”.

Most Likely Jailin Turner will be forgiven for missing weight by a pound, after producing the most violent finish of his career. Turner took the co-main event fight against Bobby Green on short notice after injury sidelined Dan Hooker. A stiff left straight right hook hurt Green. A second right hand put the veteran on the mat. A succession of ground strikes saw the ref jump in four or five strikes after he should have as Turner finishes the “King” inside the first round.

A new Bantamweight contender has emerged. Former Flyweight champion, Deiveson Figueiredo mixed allusive movement, never allowing the number 8 ranked, Rob Font to get his jab going, and takedowns. All the while draining on the gas tank of Font. The move north 10 lbs. looks to have done wonders for Figueiredo’s gas tank as he pushed the pace for all 15 minutes.

A year away from action due to two staph infections, Sean Brady returned looking in peak form. The Philadelphia fight had Kelvin Gastelum’s back in the first round, had mount in the second, and eventually submitted Gastelum by kimura in the third round.

It was a night where Clay Guida had the 62nd fight of his career and rose up the record books but failed to achieve his ultimate goal. The unanimous decision went in favor of Jaquim Silva as his takedown defense held up in a decisive third round where his striking was as effective as it was in the first round where he stuck Guida with knee in the clinch and heavy right hands. Guida now has the 2nd most control time in UFC and 4th most octagon time of any UFC fight ever passing Damian Maia in both categories.

The main card got going with Dustin Stoltzfus attacking all three levels against Punahele Soriano who was looking for the knockout shot. Stoltzfus mixed in his wrestling collecting for takedowns securing the back in the second round, finding the rear naked choke finish in the last minute of the second round.

It was a through shellacking as Meisha Tate, relentlessly utilized her wrestling game breaking down Julia Avila into submitting from a rear naked choke early in the third after two rounds of being under the former champion.

Not often do two fights end in the same manner for back to back fights to have the same rare finish is unheard of, but it happen. Joe Solecki took down Drakkar Klose a reverse saw Solecki go for an armbar the defense a slam landing Solecki on the side of his head and out cold. Cody Brundage out Zachary Reese on his back, fought off a straight armbar, and countered a triangle choke by slamming Reese unconscious. The first time I can recalled consecutive fights ending from slam.

Brazil’s Rodolfo Bellato made a successful UFC debut forcing the free-flowing Ihor Potieria into a close-range battle.  Poteria found a right hand for a knockdown in the second advancing to mount. Bellator reveres the position and pounds his way to a comeback win. It’s now a four-fight win streak for the former LFA champion.

Fighting can be the wildest rollercoaster ride. Jared Gooden versus Wellington Thurman went up, down, and hit a couple loops. The striking offence of Wellington Thurman took a giant step forward, winning the first round and having Jared Gooden Stunned in the second. A big right hand from Gooden changed the fight. Surprisingly “Nit Train” takes the Jiu Jitsu’s aces back securing a rear naked choke finish.

The card started out with Venezuela’s Veronica Hardy out pointing Jamey-Lyn Horth for a split decision victory that really looked an felt like a unanimous decision as Hardy continually got the better of the striking exchanges and twice was on top. Hardy has now won back to back fight and three of her last four.
