FightWorld 45 Delivers Action-Packed Night in Albuquerque
FightWorld 45 delivered a night of memorable finishes, hard-fought battles and championship moments at Revel Entertainment Center, with Joshua “The Destroya” Montoya and Richard “Black Skeleton” Jennings headlining a stacked 14-fight card.
In the main event, Jennings used his length and striking to edge out the opening round, attacking Montoya from the ground up. Montoya, as game as ever, answered back in the second by drawing blood from Jennings’ mouth as the fight transitioned into a grappling battle.
Montoya nearly finished the fight from his back with a triangle, but Jennings escaped and immediately chased an arm-triangle. Montoya swept his way to the top, jumping on a guillotine attempt. He opened the third round with a big takedown, but a decision to jump on another guillotine cost him position. Jennings landed on top and was able to ride out the fight to secure the decision victory over a much more experienced and game opponent.
The co-main event saw Ozzy “Beast Boy” Chavez use forward pressure and a slick right hook to control the opening round against Juan Rosales. Chavez nearly secured a rear-naked choke in the second before Rosales reversed the position and finished the round on top.
Rosales put together his strongest round in the third, dictating the pace and putting Chavez on his back with a takedown. However, Chavez’s early success proved decisive as he earned a unanimous decision, 29-28 on all three scorecards.
The night also featured the long-awaited professional debut of multiple-time amateur champion Sergio Gutierrez. Gutierrez wasted no time making an impression, brutally stopping Anthony Jagel in the opening round after unleashing a succession of knees.
Steven Ojeda opened the main card with a spectacular first professional victory. After grappling against the cage, Ojeda caught Ray Vaiza with a spinning back elbow off the break, scoring a highlight-reel knockout.
Anot championship moment came when Angel Gallegos further cemented himself as one of New Mexico’s top amateur MMA fighters. Gallegos dropped Dominick Yara with a left hook that sent Yara spinning 180 degrees before following up with ground-and-pound. A right straight sent Yara to the canvas for a second time, and Gallegos finished the fight with ground strikes to claim his second amateur championship.
The opening bout may have produced the fight of the night. Seth Stevens landed hard early against Rett Smith, but Smith battled his way back into the contest. In the third round, Smith took the fight to the ground and completed the comeback with a rear-naked choke.
From the opening fight through the main event, FightWorld 45 provided an action-packed showcase of New Mexico’s amateur and professional talent, featuring championship performances, spectacular finishes and a main event that went the distance.
