Torres, Chavez, & Flamm Shine at Johnny Tapia Memorial Event in Albuquerque

The annual Johnny Tapia Memorial card delivered a night of action, knockouts, and emotional performances as local fighters honored the legacy of one of New Mexico’s most beloved boxing icons.

Several standout performances highlighted the event, including explosive first-round knockouts by Josh Torres and Sean Hamilton, a career-best showing from Clinton Chavez, and a dramatic battle that saw Andrew Flamm score nine knockdowns en route to a dominant victory over Johnny Tapia Jr.

Josh Torres Crushes Luque in Opening Round

Welterweight Josh Torres needed just 1:26 to make a statement against Diego Gonzalo Luque.

From the opening bell, Torres applied relentless pressure, stalking Luque around the ring and punishing him with hard shots to the body. Luque briefly found room to maneuver, but Torres quickly cut off the ring and trapped him along the ropes.

The second time Luque found himself pinned, Torres unleashed a series of devastating right hooks. Three consecutive hooks landed cleanly, sending Luque crashing down and forcing the referee to wave off the contest.

The knockout victory showcased Torres’ aggressive style and finishing ability as he continues to build momentum in the welterweight division.

Clinton Chavez Delivers Breakthrough Performance

Clinton Chavez may have turned in the most complete performance of his career, stopping veteran Eduardo Monrreal via standing TKO at 1:36 of the sixth round.

For years, Chavez’s supporters have urged him to take full advantage of his natural physical gifts, particularly his significant reach advantage. Against the always-tough Monrreal, Chavez finally put it all together.

Using a sharp, active jab throughout the fight, Chavez consistently set up straight right hands and overhand rights while keeping Monrreal at the end of his punches. Although Monrreal continued pressing forward as he always does, Chavez controlled the action with disciplined boxing.

Late in the fifth round, Chavez nearly ended matters when a crushing right cross sparked a sustained offensive barrage. Monrreal survived the round, but the momentum had shifted permanently.

In the sixth, Chavez landed a perfectly timed straight right hand followed immediately by a left hook. The combination sent Monrreal stumbling into the ropes, prompting the referee to step in and stop the fight.

Andrew Flamm Survives Early Trouble, Scores Nine Knockdowns Against Tapia Jr.

In one of the night’s wildest contests, Andrew Flamm overcame a strong start from Johnny Tapia Jr. to earn a unanimous decision victory by scores of 38-29, 38-28, and 38-28.

Tapia Jr. entered the bout with noticeable improvements to his game, effectively drawing Flamm into heavy left hands during the opening stages. His offense looked sharp, and a powerful left hand in the second round had the hometown crowd sensing a potential finish.

However, Flamm weathered the storm and slowly turned the fight in dramatic fashion.

A counter left hand opened a cut on Tapia Jr.’s nose, shifting momentum. Later, Flamm was deducted a point for striking Tapia Jr. while he was down, but the penalty did little to slow him.

Flamm responded with an overwhelming assault, dropping Tapia Jr. twice in the second round—first with a crushing left hook to the body and then with a left hook upstairs.

The punishment continued throughout the contest. Flamm scored two additional knockdowns and maintained relentless pressure. By the end of the fourth round, he had accumulated an astonishing nine knockdowns overall, repeatedly targeting the body before finishing combinations to the head.

Despite the punishment, Tapia Jr. showed tremendous heart and determination, repeatedly getting back to his feet and fighting until the final bell.

Derek Perez Victorious on 24-Hour Notice

Taking the fight on just 24 hours’ notice, Derek Perez delivered a gritty performance to defeat Jonathan Tapia by unanimous decision with scores of 39-37, 40-36, and 40-36.

Perez established control early by applying constant pressure and forcing Tapia into exchanges. Working effectively inside, Perez landed uppercuts in the clinch and snapped Tapia’s head back with right hooks.

The action intensified in the second round as both fighters exchanged heavy shots. Tapia landed a sharp right cross, but Perez immediately answered with a left hook of his own.

Over the final two rounds, Perez’s superior volume and relentless forward movement proved decisive. Even as Tapia continued firing back and displaying tremendous toughness, Perez consistently outworked him and maintained control of the pace.

The short-notice victory was an impressive showing for Perez, who never looked like a fighter preparing on limited time.

Hamilton Ends Night Early with Highlight-Reel Knockout

Light heavyweight Sean Hamilton closed out his evening in spectacular fashion, knocking out Daquanti Johnson just 1:12 into the opening round.

Hamilton stunned Johnson early with a sharp jab followed immediately by a hook from the same side. The combination landed flush and visibly hurt Johnson.

Recognizing the damage, Hamilton quickly recreated the sequence moments later. The second jab-hook combination produced the desired result, dropping Johnson and bringing a swift end to the contest.

The emphatic first-round knockout served as a reminder of Hamilton’s power and ability to finish fights in explosive fashion.

A Night Worthy of the Tapia Name

The Johnny Tapia Memorial event once again showcased the toughness, heart, and fighting spirit that defined the late boxing legend’s career. From Torres’ blistering knockout to Chavez’s breakout performance and Flamm’s remarkable nine-knockdown victory, the Albuquerque crowd was treated to an action-packed evening that honored Tapia’s legacy in fitting fashion.
