How we got to Nurmagomedov vs Iaquinta

The UFC has said the Lightweight Title would be on the line at UFC 223 and after the wildest week in the Promotions history the title is still kinda on the line Saturday night.

To recap a cable on the Fox set caused Tony Ferguson to trip and endure a knee injury. Featherweight Champion Max Holloway was then selected to replace Ferguson. The Hawaiian fighter weight cut would be stopped by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) , without having Holloway evaluated by a doctor.

The UFC then offered the fight to former champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis, who was opponent less after Michale Chiesa was pulled from the card as a result of Connor McGregor throwing a dolly threw a bus wind. Pettis failed to make Championship weight (155.2) and asked the UFC for a raise in his pay. The UFC declined.

The UFC next turned to Paul Felder, but the NYSAC wouldn’t approve the fight because of where Felder is in the rankings.

The opportunity to face Nurmagomedov was next given to Al Iaquinta the number 11 tanked contender, who was originally scheduled to face Paul Felder. Iaquinta will now face Nurmagomedov in a 5-round Main event UFC 223. Th drama is over Iaquinta weighed in at 155.2, meaning only Nurmagomedov is eligible to win the title tomorrow night in Brooklyn.
