Final Fight of Nate Diaz’s UFC contract will be a Main Event

A long rumored Welterweight match pitting fan favorite veteran against rising star will headline UFC 279.

UFC 279 will be on September 22nd from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Nate Diaz has reached near cult following status during his time fighting for the UFC. The final fight of Diaz’s current UFC contract will see the “TUF” season 5 winner battling the undefeated Khamzat Chimaev. Yes the UFC 279 main event will be a five round non-title fight. A match that had been speculated  to have been in the works for quite some months.

Diaz is a proud representative of Stockton California challenged for the UFC lightweight title in 2012. Four years later Diaz’s had the biggest moment of his career submitting Conor McGregor on short notice in the main event of UFC 196. A When the catapulted his fame and celebrity into a different level.  Diaz overwhelming popularity even caused the UFC to create BMF title that Diaz & Jorge Masvidal fought for in the worlds most famous arena, Madison Square Garden. Nate is coming off a  decision loss to Leon Edwards but most remember Diaz having Edwards in retreat at the final bell.

Chimaev burst onto the UFC scene during the Covid-19 pandemic while the promotion was putting on events on “Fight Island”. Khamzat jumped in on short notice submitting John Phillips in a Middleweight bout. Ten days later the legend of Chimaev would continue as he’d go down to welterweight and run through Rhys McKee. The first round finishes would keep coming for Chimaev who would go back to Middleweight to knockout Gerald Meerschaert and back to Welterweight to submit the top 15 ranked Li Jingilang. Chimaev rose to three in the third ranks after out bring his stiffest test former title challenger Gilbert Burns.

This is definitely a high stakes voucher between fighters totally opposite places in their careers. One a butting superstar looking to go to new heights. The other a underdog legend once again fighting against a promotional darling.
