Pitbull attempts history & Nemkov vs. Romero is Rebooked
Bellator is returning to the Windy City with a championship double header on June 16th.
The main event will see Yoel Romero (15-6) challenging Vadim Nemkov (16-2) for the Bellator Light-Heavyweight world championship. If this sounds familiar it’s because this fight was originally scheduled for Bellator 290 before the champion was forced to withdraw. Romero is 2-0 in Bellator collecting third round TKO wins over Alex Polizzi & Melvin Manhoef. Nemkov is unbeaten in his last ten fights. In November Nemkov defended his belt for a third time defeating Corey Anderson to win the Light-Heavyweight Grand Prix.
The first title fight will give an opportunity for history to be made as Patricio Freire will attempt to win a Bellator world title in third weight-class something not accomplished in major MMA. “Pitbull” the current Featherweight and for Lightweight champion will be challenging Sergio “The Phenom” Pettis for the Bellator Bantamweight world title. Freire is on his third reign as Bellator Featherweight champion, and all told with his Lightweight title win over Michael Chandler has won 12 Bellator title fights. In 2021 Pettis beat Juan Archuleta & Kyoji Horiguchi to secure his status as Bellator Bantamweight world champion. “The Phenom” was sideline all of 2022 after tearing his ACL while preparing to face Raufeon Stots in the Bellator Bantamweight world grand prix, which is set for conclusion in April.
Bellator 297 is June 6th at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois.
