Adesanya defends against Strickland at UFC 293

UFC 293 is quickly approaching and one key detail of the event had been missing. Who was going to be in the main event. We now have that information.

It was long expected that Israel Adesanya would find himself on the marquee for the  September 9th card  at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, but who would be his advisory.

At UFC 290 Dricus Du Plessi won his 8th in a row, 5th in the UFC knocking out former champion Robert Whittaker.  It look like the African war was on with Nigeria’s Adesanya & Sputh Africa’s Du Plessi jawing in the center of the Octagon. A Du Plessi foot injury changed those plans.

The next obvious choice was the brash and opinionated Sean Strickland, but Strickland on social media indicated that that UFC was going in a different direction. That appears to have been an attempt to throw many off the trail of what was to be announced.  Stickland is has won both his fight this year taking a unanimous decision win over Nassoudine Imavov & stopping Abus Magomedov for a second round TKO.

Adesanya beat Kelvin Gastelum in 2019 to win the UFC interim Middleweight title. The  credentialed kickboxer became full champion six months later. After five defenses “The Last StyleBender” was dethroned by his kickboxing nemesis Alex Pereira. Five months later at UFC 287 Adesanya exacted his revenge and regain his title with a devastating knockout victory.
