Lightweight Title Fight Headlines UFC 302

At the UFC 300 post fight press conference Dana White announced who Islam Makhachev will defend against next.

When the reigning 155 lbs champion step in the octagon next he’ll do so against Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier.

UFC 302 is set for June 1st at the Prudential Center in Newark New Jersey.

Since submitting Charles Oliveira to win the world title in November 2022, the Dagestan fogged has unseeded Alexander Volkanovski as the top pound for pound fighter in the sport with two wins of the featherweight great. This past November Makhchev put his rivalry and Volkanovski to bed with a high kick.

Poirier is a staple of the UFC whose tenure with the company goes back to the Zuffa days and the WEC. “The Diamond” has shined winning an interim UFC Lightweight title in 2019. The Louisiana natives last four wins has been finishes two of Conor McGregor, Michael Chandler, & Benoit Saint-Denis.

A second five-round contest was announced for the card that will see former Middleweight champion Sean Strickland squaring off with number seven ranked Paulo Costa. Strickland was the fighter of the year in 2023 capping it off by dethroning Israel Adesanya. Brazil’s coast is a power puncher with 11 of his 14 wins by knockout.

The card will also feature the official debut of the new UFC gloves.
