LFA 183 Results, Guimares Looks Ready for a Title Fight After handling Cantanhede
Internationally known but Yasmin Guimares had to return to home for her most important win to date.
The Biggest weekend of the year for MMA in Brazil saw LFA 183 take the stage in Rio de Janeiro as the opening act on Friday night ahead of UFC 301 on Saturday night. Not just a big night for Brazilian MMA but for the LFA Women’s divisions as the 12-fight card featured five female fights including the main event.
Yasmin Guimares took full advantage of her LFA debut and main event showcase defeating Naizi Cantanhede by unanimous decision. Guimares dragged Cantanhede to the ground twice in the first round. The fight would stay standing longer in the second Guimares putting Cantanhede on the fence softening her foe up with a succession of knees. Cantanhede with a ton of heart had her best round in the third getting taken down again sealing the deal for two judges but one did see the final frame for Cantanhede who was boxing well, moving forward, and pushing the pace the final minute.
Guimares hands Cantanhede her first professional loss in eight outings while she’s now won five in a row. An A performance in her promotional debut would mean the only place up to go from here would be seeing Yasmin Guimares fighting for and LFA title the next time out.
The LFA is already known as one of the top feeder leagues to the UFC. Knowing that the industry leader was in the same town might be how you explain four incredible finishes from the other five main card fights.
Vinicius Pires seized the moment tied one round a peace with Marlon Basilio it was Pires marching into the pocket and sleeping Basilio with a tight right uppercut. Seeing the fight slipping through his grasp Cristiano Franca went for broke to stand up exposing his back Gabriel Costa got on the back forcing the tap with less than two minutes left. Marcleo Marques put Gustavo Henrique on the mat early an attempted reversal saw Marques go from mount to the back to pinning Henrique’s arm in his armpit and mercifully not breaking the arm just taking his fifth submission win.
6’8″ Heavyweight Talisson Teixeira got the main car going by collecting his fifth win by knockout and second in the LFA. Teixeira worked behind his jab forcing Mathys Fonseca against the fence. Fonseca escaping the exchanges to his left crumbled as a stiff one-two was followed by a massive right high kick and the ground strikes had the ref jumping in.
We should have expected such an exciting card after Leidiane Fernandes slept Djulia Ariana in the cards first prelim. Fernandez ruthlessly chopped away at Ariana’s left leg. When Ariana went to return the fire, her kick was caught, and her light were turned out from a straight right hand down the pipe.
