Perez proves to Still be a Hammer at the Resurrection

Sunday is easter but Saturday night the Resurrection took place at Embassy Suites. Franklin Romero has the full story.
The main Event of Legacy Boxing Promotions “The Resurrection” featured Abraham “The Hammer” Perez with his perfect 10-0 record returning to the ring after an 8-month absence following a near death experience.

“The Hammer” weighing in at 111.6 pounds came into the ring chipper and energetic to face off with Jose Eduardo “El Diablo” Rodriguez Montemayor (7-9-0) at 114 pounds out of Coahuila Mexico and now fighting out of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.
Though Rodriguez had a record of 6 KO’s and was an experienced fighter Perez was able to drop the hammer by way of a left uppercut at 2:05 in the 2nd round forcing Rodriguez to take a knee. Rodriguez was unable to recover. In his own words Rodriguez said, “He caught me with an upper and I tried to stand up and I couldn’t”.
Perez was all smiles as his fans cheered and posed photos with his supporter’s post-fight.
Perez for his part said, “It just comes like a reaction, If I see it— it’s just going to be there…I hit him with a body upper—it just sealed the deal.”
“It feels good—I had a warm welcoming–they wanted pictures,” said Perez of his interaction with his fans.
Perez is waiting to see what is going to happen in the future; however, he is not wasting time as he plans to be back in the gym starting next Wednesday. Perez advances his record to 11-0 after this bout.
After a 5-year absence from the ring Fidel “The Atrisco Kid” Maldonado Jr. returned to the ring and in a pre-fight interview earlier this week Maldonado said he was “happy to be back in the ring”. However, on fight night, Maldonado was not so happy with the outcome of his return fight as after an accidental headbutt to his opponent, German “Panteonero” Meraz (65-72, 41 KO’s), the fight was stopped. A large cut to the right upper cheek of Meraz was too much for referee Rocky Burke and the boxing commission to all the fight to continue. The bout was ruled a “no contest”. Maldonado was visibly disappointed and in a post-fight interview said, “I thought they should have let it go–I was just starting to get warmed up.” Maldonado has no immediate plans for the ring and is “taking a break” and will see what comes up.
There were no Easter baskets or overpriced eggs at this bout, however, there was a towel in the 2nd round.
The towel was thrown in by the corner of Derik Bartlemay (2-12) from Eugene Oregon at 2:17 of the 2nd round. They had seen enough. Burqueno Xavier Madrid (5-6, 2 KO’s) pummeled the Oregon native in the first round and continued his barrage in the second round. Bartlemay could only cover, duck and try to maneuver out of the way of the flying punches and uppercuts. A faster and stronger Madird who zeroed in on his opponent at the end of the 1st round came out roaring in the 2nd round and the continued zero in his hits to the head and body. Bartlemay’s response was less counter punching and less maneuvering which was too much for Bartlemay’s corner to handle. Madrid added a 6th win to his record.

If you looked out on Saturday night you would see some rising stars just over the Sandias. If you were at the Embassy Suites on Saturday there was a different kind of rising star in the 2nd bout of the night as Andres Rey, who came in at 3-0, improved to 4-0 after a lightning-fast knockout of his opponent at 1:07 in the 1st round.

Rey made short work of Ernesto Hernandez (2-23, 2 KO’s) of El Paso. Rey measured up Hernandez and
hit Hernandez with a strong left, knocking Hernandez down to the cheers of the crowd. A dazed Hernadez clutched his head in obvious pain and was slow to rise and referee Rocky Burke called the fight.

Rey was pleased with the result and said he was “eager” for his next fight and hoped that one would go more than a round. Rey will next box on July 12th in El Paso, Texas at Ring Wars.

Elijah “Blue” Martinez (3-1) of Kirtland, NM was more assertive and landed quality 1-2 punches and uppercuts to his opponent, Gabriel Martinez (0-1) of El Paso, Tx.
Stoppage at :27 seconds of the 2nd round by the referee gave “Blue” a win and he improves to 4-1.
