Mike Malott Delivers Highlight-Reel Knockout in UFC Edmonton Main Event
The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, for a welterweight showdown that saw hometown favorite Mike Malott send the crowd home happy.
After an opening round in which Joaquin Buckley landed heavy hooks and pressured Malott, the Canadian found his opening in the second, driving a perfectly timed knee into Buckley’s chin and sending his mouthpiece flying across the Octagon. The knockout marked Malott’s fifth consecutive victory and against his toughest test to date. Entering the night ranked No. 12, Malott could move into Buckley’s No. 10 spot in the welterweight rankings.
In the co-main event, Jasmine Jasudavicius used her grappling to control Erin Blanchfield for much of the first two rounds. Blanchfield rallied in the later stages, finding success with her boxing, but was unable to secure the finish needed to turn the fight around.
Elsewhere on the card, Cristian Perez made an immediate impression in his Octagon debut, demolishing Kyle Nelson in under 30 seconds. The Mexican lightweight connected with a pair of hooks before unleashing heavy ground-and-pound to secure the stoppage and announce himself as a prospect to watch.
Marc-André Barriault also delivered a statement performance, shutting down Kyle Daukaus’ takedown attempts with punishing knees and elbows before finishing the fight with ground strikes in the first round.
After shaking off the nerves in his Octagon debut, Mandel Nallo showcased his potential against Nate Landwehr. Nallo used a stiff jab and crushing calf kicks to break down Landwehr, whose leg eventually gave way. Nallo capitalized, finishing the fight with ground strikes in the second round.
