Originally UFC 222 was scheduled to see Frankie Edgar challenging Max Holloway for the UFC Featherweight title, but a Holloway leg injury changed that. Wanting to still fight on the card Edgar will now face Brian Ortega in a number 1 contenders bout in the co-main event.
The main event has former Invicta FC Bantamweight champion Yana Kunitskaya (10-3) looking to dethrone Cris “Cyborg” (19-1). Kunitskaya 28, from Saint Petersburg, Russia, trains at JacksonWink MMA in Albuquerque, NM. Kunitskaya has 8 finishes, 7 by knock out, coming off a split decision win over Raquel Pa”. Cyborg 32, from Curitiba, Brazil, now residing in San Diego, California, hasn’t lost in the cage since her pro debut and has racked up 16 finishes all knock outs. Cyborg is coming off a UFC 219 decision victory over Holly Holm.
