A new UFC flyweight champion is set to be crown on February 29th.
Multiple division champion Henry Cejudo has decided to focus on defending his bantamweight title by relinquishing the flyweight title.
The new champion will be crowned in the main event of UFC Fight Night 169. Which will take place at the Chartway Arena in Norfolk, Virginia on February 29th. The two- title fight participates will be number one ranked contender Joseph Benavidez facing number three ranked contender Deiveson Figueiredo.
Cejudo won the flyweight championship in August of 2018 by split decision over Demetrious Johnson. In January “The Messenger” defended the title knocking out then bantamweight champion JT Dillashaw in just 32 second. Dillashaw would be stripped of the bantamweight title after testing positive for a performance enhancing drug. In June Cejudo became “Triple C” by stopping Marlon Moares in the third round to become the fourth simultaneous UFC multi division champion.
Benavidez holds a decision win over Henry Cejudo and is currently riding a three-fight win streak. Two of the victories, over Alex Perez, at the TUF 28 Finale & over Jussier Formiga, at UFC on ESPN 3 have come by TKO. Brazil’s Figueiredo is 6-1 inside the octagon. Having won back to back fights. A decision over Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 240 and a submission of Tim Elliott at UFC Fight Night 161.
The card is scheduled to be shown on ESPN+ and will be the 27th fight night on the streaming service.
