UFC Vegas 89 Results, Namajunas outpoints Ribas

The goal of a championship in a second division isn’t a far-fetched idea for Rose Namajunas after a much better second impression at Flyweight. 

The UFC Apex in Las Vegas Nevada was the backdrop to UFC Fight Night “Ribas vs. Namajunas”. The 12-fight card headlined by a Women’s Flyweight showdown number eight ranked Amanda Ribas taking on former UFC Strawweight champion “Thug” Rose Namajunas

A sharp and technical Namajunas moved in and out landing stinging single punches. Ribas looked for her spin kicks and headlock throws, Namajunas reversing the position racking up top time totaling seven minutes. The former Strawweight champion found her takedown in the fourth spending more than half the round on top.

The unanimous decision gets Rose back in the win column for the first time since November of 2021. You can expect to see Ribas number 8 next to Namajunas name when the rankings come out next week. Namajunas mentioned that she’s like to fight either Manon Fiorot, who she lost to last September or Erin Blanchfield, the two fight is next weekend’s UFC Fight Night main event in Atlantic City. 

The co-main event saw Karl Williams avoid danger on the feet and compete seven takedowns to earn a unanimous decision win over Justin Tafa. Williams recorded his third win in the octagon and his sixth win in a row.

Edmen Shahbazyan got his hand raised for the first time since 2022 in a comeback win over AJ Dobson. The fight was just like a rollercoaster and only lasted one round. Dobson staggered Shahbayan with right & left hooks. The 26-year-old hung in there and found the space for his own right hand. Shahbazyan capitalized on the knockdown with rapid fire left putting Dobson out cold.

The showdown between bantamweight prospects turned out to be the Payton Talbott coming out party. A slow starter no more Talbott was on the offense from the get-go. Elbows in the clinch started show damage across Cameron Saaiman’s face and forced him into a takedown that met a Talbott knee square on.  A counter left hook in the opening seconds of the 2nd rounc sat Saaiman on his bum Talbott followed to the ground punching to the finish.

Youssef Zalal made a triumphant return to the UFC after having parted ways in 2022. “The Moroccan Devil” got his first finish in the UFC submitting Bill Quarantillo. Zalal picked apart Billy Q as he followed his never stationary counterpart. Zalal nearly found the finish in the first stunning Quarantillo with a step-in knee, taking the back and was close on the neck. In the second Zalal took the back again, this time taking the rear naked choke.

Mexico’s Fernando Padilla secured his 2nd UFC win submitting Luis Pajuelo. Padilla stunned Pajuelo with a counter left hook, knocked him down with a straight left, and finished the fight with a D’Arce choke as Pajuelo tried to grapple to his barons back in place.

The highlight of the prelims was a comeback win from Juilian Erosa. Ricardo Ramos looked to be closing in on a victory after staggering Erosa with an overhand right & jump knee. Ramos was the one having success on the feet decide to shoot in double leg takedown into Erosa guillotine a tap coming before Ramos lost concusses. We also had a touch of the strange as Igor Severino was disqualified for biting Andre Lima. Kevin Iole was first to report that Severino will be released from the promotion for his actions.
